Read full description of the books:
This is David's second book of poetry. It contains thirty well written poems on a variety of subjects, all of them common in David's work. Some of the poems included are from other authors / poets.
David's love of writing, especially of poetry, is evident from the first poem in this book. David's poetry contains no flouncy Shakespearean prose. Although he does use metre, rhythm and beat, he is fully aware he does not always follow them if they do not fit the flow of the poetry. He does know how to tell a good story, and his style of writing and language invite you in.
I could write a review of each poem in the collection but I do not want to rob you of the pleasure of reading this book for yourself. I will mention a few of my favourites.
Rhymes of Times opens with a clever, well written, well thought out poem that expresses David's love of writing, simply entitled I Love Writing. Each stanza gives you a further peek in to what makes this man tick, why he writes and what he hopes to accomplish. He shares his motivators and dreams with us.
My Dad by Lisa Kinsella (nee Delaney) is sweet and you feel the love between them but I feel there is a backstory I want to know more of.
I Was There is beautiful poem written from the 'other side'. It tells of a man's passing and him looking over his widowed wife as slowly her life evolves.
Loving You is a beautiful touching poem to his Grand/Daughter. David's use of similies is quite expected but you still want to read to the end to see the final verse.
Greg & Virginia is a beautiful poem written with his wife Beverley, about love blossoming.
I Will Forget You Not is written in a similar manner to All is Well by Canon Henry Scott Holland and The Rose Beyond The Wall by A. L. Frink. The message, remember the good times.
Robby is a beautiful inspiring poem, the last verse made me tear up. I do not want to spoil it by telling you the ending.
Old Sailor Dan is another touching and emotional poem.
Nightmare of Love is a humourous (for the reader) retelling of a friend's tale of drunken promises
David's language and skill in writing can transport you to the spot highlighted in his poems. The following poems are great examples of this:
Old Pandanus Tree
If the last poetry you read was Shakespeare at school (under protest) then this is the book for you. It is written in clear English, you do not need to 'work it out'.
This is a great collection of poetry and deserves to be read.
Well done David.
