I love Beverly Lewis. I love this new Home to Hickory Hollow series-that-isn't-a-series. But, I am sorry, I did not love this story. I'm kinda bummed about that, because I was really looking forward to it based on the descriptions and everything. I just felt like the gripping action happened in the first 1/5 of the book, and then it was this long, tedious drawn-out story. I didn't really care about Mandy (the protagonist's sister), because I felt she just needed to suck it up and live the life she chose. I was super annoyed with Tessie Ann hiding something that was pretty damn obvious to most everyone -- the drama just felt stunted and drawn out and petty. I feel like Tessie's story was a vignette that could have been resolved a lot quicker, with a fresher, more interesting story about "God's Special Children" coming around with perhaps Mandy or any one of the other M sisters rather than the bland and saccharine ending that did happen (Considering that this genre is supposed to have happy endings; that it's like eating a candy bar, it's pretty bad when the ending is too saccharine for even me.) Even Ella Mae just wasn't herself to me in this book. I guess everyone has an off story, but when it's a powerhouse author, it's a huge disappointment. Maybe Beverly needs to take a break, go stay in Lancaster for a bit, and come back to writing with fresh eyes.
