Read full description of the books:
The Little Humpbacked Horse by Elizabeth Winthrop and Alexander Koshkin is an old Russian folktale about the youngest of three brothers, Ivan, who is guarding hay for his father after several incidents of thievery. Ivan discovers a magical horse has been breaking into their haystack and eating their hay at night. He catches her and she makes a bargain with Ivan. If he lets her go she will give him one of her offspring who will be of great use to Ivan always. Ivan agrees and is granted with a funny looking horse with a hump on its back. With his horse companion by his side, Ivan finds good luck everywhere. He begins working for the tsar as a stable boy. The tsar is impressed and the other workers feel jealous. They spread rumors to the tsar about Ivan’s “abilities”. The tsar is sent on challenging missions by the tsar to prove himself and with his horse’s help, Ivan always seems to come through. When Ivan is sent to convince a beautiful woman to marry the tsar, he ends of falling in love himself. In the end of the story, it is the tsar against Ivan to win the heart of the beautiful woman. With advice from the humpbacked horse, Ivan succeeds and becomes tsar himself. Russia rejoices because Ivan, unlike the old tsar is kind and fair. I enjoyed this story because it demonstrated the underdog coming out on top. I like quirky animals and I enjoyed the bizarre wisdom of the humpbacked horse. I would like to use this book in my classroom to have students identify elements of the folklore genre. Also, it is just a fun read o share with students at the end of the school day or whenever there is time for free reading. The artwork was eye-catching, as well. I like how it appeared to be very old like the tale, even though the book itself was not published too long ago.
